Esquire magazine began in 1933 in Chicago, and later moved to NY. In its first 15 years the magazine was largely about men’s fashion, with contributions from some of America’s leading writers. In the 1960s Esquire magazine helped pioneer the trend of New Journalism, publishing writers such as Norman Mailer, Tom Wolfe, and Gay Talese. During the tenure of editor David M. Granger, from 1997-2016, Esquire magazine and its writers won numerous awards. Since his replacement in 2016 by Jay Fielden, the style has been updated and political coverage has increased. An American magazine published from 1924 to 1981; this online magazine archives has issues through the 1950s. It was founded as the brainchild of H. L. Mencken and drama critic George Jean Nathan. The magazine featured writing by some of the most important writers in the United States through the 1920s and 1930s. After a change in ownership in the 1940s, the magazine attracted conservative writers. A second change in ownership a decade later turned the magazine into a virulently anti-Semitic publication. Life was published as a weekly magazine from 1883 to 1972. It was initially a humor and general interest / light entertainment magazine, similar to the British magazine Puck. Very old magazines online. An excellent source for early railroad history in the U.S., this vintage magazine was established in 1831, at the very beginning of the railroad era. Vol 2 and most subsequent volumes until 1876 are at the two group links. The sequence of volumes is confusing, as a second and then a third series began appearing during the 1840s, and sometimes volume numbers for two series appear on the magazine.
